Poland welcomes the signing by US President Donald Trump of an act that upholds the existing policy of US sanctions against the Russian Federation.

Ever since Russia’s annexation of Crimea and aggression against Ukraine, restrictions have been introduced by presidential executive orders. The fact that sanctions have now been adopted in the form of an act which was supported by a large Congressional majority gives hope that they will be more effective.

At the same time, the extension by the said act of sanctions against Russia’s energy sector, including companies which are involved in the Nord Stream 2 project, is consistent with the strategic interest of Poland and the Central and Eastern Europe region. This could also contribute to greater diversification of energy supplies to the European Union as a whole.
